About Me

Rachael Jane Chin
(working under the byline Rachael Osman-Chin until mid 2010)

Journalism

Chair of the Sydney Freelance Journalists Group – October 2008 – June 2010 – my key achievement was highlighting the need for freelance journalists to be allowed legal collective representation. In May 2010, the ACCC granted the relevant exemption to the Trade Practices Act, thereby allowing the legal collective representation of freelance journalists.

Freelance Journalist – from early 2005 – my work has been published in crikey.com.au, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian Financial Review.

Journalist, Australian Financial Review, April 2002 – October 2004 – features about online music piracy, major US and local online music piracy litigation and scams. Daily news stories about telecommunications and IT, with many stories focused on consumer concerns.

Deputy Editor, BusinessOnline Australia magazine, May 2001 – February 2002.

Journalist, trade magazines, September 1999 – May 2001.

Media Relations Work

  • Shayan Badraie – In early March 2006 the Federal Court ordered the Federal Government to pay compensation to an 11-year old child for serious psychiatric damage caused by his detention at Woomera and Villawood detention centres. I co-ordinated national print, radio and television coverage of the decision and ghost-wrote an opinion piece for Maurice Blackburn Cashman principal Rebecca Gilsenan, which was published in The Australian 7 March 2006, page 12.
  • Amcor class action – I co-ordinated a story for the launch of the class action which was broadcasted 11 April 2006 by the ABC’s 7.30 Report. I also ran the press conference for the launch, which resulted in national print, radio and television coverage.
